Cheung Ching Tunnel – Hongkong

    Client: Dragages et Travaux Publics

    Technical data:

    Two tunnels – 1500 m each
Tunnel cross section – 135 m²

    Technology:

Tunnels were executed in preliminary casing of anchors and shotcrete. Final casing made of monolithic concrete.

This task was one of the largest enterprises of its type undertaken by PeBeKa. The matter of the contract was the building of two parallel Cheung Ching road tunnels, leading to the Hong Kong airport. As part of this project breakthroughs were also made for pedestrians and vehicles.

Each tunnel accommodated three-lane highways. For drilling in hard granites the NATM method was used, which takes advantage of the rock formation as bearing element of construction support. All mining experiences of the company paid off, and were fleshed out with extra precision and caution. Though tunnel digging was done with explosives, the casing had to be done with only a few centimeters’ tolerance. Proximity of municipal buildings demanded that special sound dampeners be installed on machines and ventilators, and that explosives be used only during the day.
